Hi golfers, I'm Todd Kolb for About.com. We're going to talk about beginner golf equipment.
Buying Basic Golf Equipment
For those of you who are new to the game and it's time to start playing a few rounds of golf and you need to start looking at buying equipment, what we'll call beginners equipment, a couple things we need to know. The first thing is that before you play a round of golf you're going to certainly have to have some equipment or have what we call a set of clubs.
Essentials for Beginner Golf Equipment
Now when you get a set of clubs you can get a full set of golf clubs which means 14 clubs, typically 8 or 9 irons, a couple woods and of course a putter. But, you don't have to have a full set to play a round of golf, you can have what we call a partial set which might be just 4 or 5 irons, 1 or 2 woods, and a putter. So, you don't have to have 14 clubs to play a round of golf, even 8 or 9 will certainly get you around the golf course.
Renting Beginner Golf Equipment
Another thing you might consider is that most golf courses will allow you to rent golf clubs if you're only going to go play a couple rounds of golf to see if it's something that you enjoy you might consider actually renting a set of golf clubs.
Necessary Items Besides Golf Clubs
Now when we talk specifically about the equipment, of course we've already mentioned the irons and the woods, but you're also going to have to have a bag, you have to have something that you can carry your clubs around in. You're also going to have to have some golf tees, and certainly some golf balls. And make sure you have plenty of golf balls. I wouldn't start a round without at least 6 to 10 golf balls because you very well could be losing some and you're going to have to have enough to certainly finish the round.
Optional Beginner Golf Equipment
Now there's a couple other things that you can have optional, you don't have to have to play a round of golf but you might consider. The first thing is a pair of golf shoes. Now the nice thing about a pair of golf shoes is that generally they're going to keep your feet drier than just standard tennis shoes and also they're going to give you a little bit better grip or traction when you're working your way around the golf course.
A golf glove is something you might consider. A lot of golfers like to wear a golf glove when they're playing. You also might want to wear a hat to protect you from the sun and certainly some sunscreen as well. So, if you're a beginner golfer and you're looking to play your first few rounds of golf you do have to have some equipment and these ideas will certainly give you enough stuff so that you can get yourself around the golf course.
