Hi, I'm Gina Miller, and today for About.com we're going to discuss tips for visiting Lake Como, Italy.

Best Times for Visiting Lake Como

Located in the northern Italian lakes district, Lake Como is the deepest and most popular lake in the country. It's surrounded by a picturesque countryside with hills and forests, and has been a popular destination for lovers since Roman times. I think the best time to travel to Como is in the spring and fall, as you can avoid the busy summer tourist season, but still enjoy beautiful weather. However the winter months can also be quite nice and you're only minutes away from the snow covered Alps.

Getting to Lake Como

Getting to Lake Como is quite easy, however there are no direct flights. It's best to fly into Milan's Malpensa airport and rent a car or you can catch a train from Milano Statzione Centrale. The 30 minute one-way trip to the town of Como can cost as little as $6.

Tour Como Before Visiting Lake Como

After you arrive and before you adventure out and about the lake, be sure to check out the town of Como. It has a rich history and a lively town square featuring many hotels and cafes. There are many lodging options on any budget. Rooms can range from a mere $30 to over $800 per night depending on the season.

Transportation Tips for Visiting Lake Como

Now, the most efficient method of transportation around the lake is the ferry system. Ferries run on schedules and service many of the popular villages. You can also take a bus or drive but the hilly, winding roads are narrow and quite dangerous. So be very careful. Here's a tip, if you decide to drive be sure and rent a GPS system. Navigating in Italy is very difficult. Believe me it's well worth the minimal daily fee.

Tour Bellagio When Visiting Lake Como

One village you won't want to miss and my favorite is Bellagio. The picturesque point where all three branches of the lake come together -- it's known as the "pearl of the lake." You could seemingly wander for days, up and down the narrow corridors and streets of this ancient village, but you can always find the internet. Oh, and don't forget to have a great meal in one of the fantastic restaurants of Bellagio. You'll be glad you did.
