Hi, I'm Gina Miller and today for About.com we are going to go over tips for visiting the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The Eiffel Tower is probably the most impressive and well-known structure in Paris and it's currently the most visited paid monument in the world with nearly 7 million visitors each year.
History of the Eiffel Tower
The tower was built by Gustav Eiffel as the entryway to the Universal Exposition of 1889. It rises 1062 feet above Paris and it's approximately the same height as an 89-story building. Compare that to The Empire State Building which is 1454 feet or 102 stories. You can see the structure from almost anywhere in Paris but you'll want to experience the Eiffel Tower from one of its 3 viewing levels.
Order Tickets for the Eiffel Tower
Now, like most tourist attractions there is a cost to enter. You can purchase a ticket for entry to the 1st and 2nd levels only. The 1st level is about 19 stories high and the 2nd rises 38 stories. Or you can buy a ticket to go all the way to the top and visit all three levels. Here's a tip: Order your tickets online and avoid long wait times. Simply fill out the online form and print your tickets right at home and you'll walk right in.
Tips for Visiting the First Level of the Eiffel Tower
On the ground level you'll find an ATM, ticket booths, souvenirs even a post office so you can send home postcards right from the tower. The first level has been recently renovated and during the winter months, it houses a fantastic ice skating rink. You'll also find lots of interesting historical facts about the tower. The first floor also boasts the world famous Eiffel Tower 58 Restaurant where you can enjoy a great view and a great lunch -- and it's even brought to you in a picnic basket.
Tips for Visiting the Second Level of the Eiffel Tower
Personally, I think the best views of Paris are found on the second level. From here you can see for miles in all directions. Here's another tip: if you only purchased a ticket for the first 2 levels and then decide you'd like to go to all the way to the top, you can simply purchase that additional segment on the 2nd level.
Tips for Visiting the Top Level of the Eiffel Tower
Now, even though you can walk the 704 steps to the 2nd level it's important to note that the only way to reach the top is by elevator and lines can be hours long if you don't pre-purchase a ticket. But once at the top you'll have a breathtaking view from two observation decks, one covered and one uncovered. So you can always end you day here at the Eiffel Tower with a wonderful glass of Champagne and a wonderful view. But it's even more amazing after dark, so bring your lover and enjoy the world's most romantic city by night.
