Transcript:Quick Tip: What Is Vinho Verde?
Hello I'm Milo for About.com and today we're talking about the Portuguese wine Vinho Verde.
What is Vinho Verde?
Part of the ancient history of winemaking in the territory, Vinho Verde is produced exclusively in Portugal in the Minho region but also a bit in the Douro and other places. A special region was demarcated for this wine in 1908 that is concentrated in the northern part of the country.
Vinho Verde is a white, rose, or red wine, but most likely you'll come across the white variety. Literally Vinho Verde means green wine, but in actuality here means a young wine. So it is meant to be drunk shortly after bottling, within a year, and therefore is a favorite table wine especially in the summer. It is not made from one specific grape but a compilation of varieties found in the region.
More on Vinho Verde
The tradition of making this vintage is rather involved and goes back centuries. Historically made in small batches, it requires quite a bit of work and attention to detail. The Portuguese producers of this wine are rightly proud of their heritage and efforts and you will find yourself adding this delicious and light wine to your favorites as well.
