Hi, I'm Gina Miller, and today for About.com we are going to talk about how to drive from Fiumicino Airport to central Rome.

Driving to Rome Can Be Difficult

Fiumicino, or Leonardo da Vinci Airport, is the main airport in Rome and most likely where you will fly into when visiting the city. Of course, driving is the most convenient way to adventure through the countryside. However, driving in major Italian cities is very difficult, especially in Rome! Many cities, including Rome, also have a restricted driving zone that's only for residents. If you venture into that zone, you'll most likely be hit with heavy fines.

Route From Fiumicino Airport to Rome

Now, while there are easier methods of transportation from the airport to central Rome, if you must drive -- here's how to do it. The drive from Fiumicino to central Rome is mainly comprised of the A91 autostrade, or highway. It's about a 16 mile drive and can take you up to an hour, depending on traffic.

Specific Directions to Rome

First, follow the signs to exit the airport toward A91-Rome. Stay on A91 for about 12 miles, then continue onto Viadotto della Magliana. In about 1.2 miles, you'll take the exit for Via Cristoforo Colombo. Continue for about 3 miles and you'll end up in the center of Rome. Here's a tip: Remember that Autostrades are toll roads, so be sure to ask about current toll fees when you arrive at the airport.

And that is how to drive, if you must, from Fiumicino Airport to central Rome. Thanks for watching, and for more information, visit us online at About.com.
