Hi, I'm Ramon Johnson for About.com. Today we're going to ask same sex couples about their marriage proposals.

We had a meeting with our pastor about the different things we could to protect ourselves as a couple and said something you can definitely do is have a ceremony. Um and we're like ok – so that's something we stand up in church and do. She said no, no it's a wedding, you plan a wedding.

I think we spontaneously said to each other let's just do it.

Well, Billy proposed to me. Well, and the story behind it is that tom was ready and he was ready to say I do and he asked me that when I was ready that I propose to him.

We always had a very festive Christmas party the first weekend in December and we decided let's just have a ceremony as part of this and that's what we did.

So, I got real excited about planning a wedding. And so the deal was if we did all of the other stuff, the domestic partnership, um, civil union, all those things, then we could throw a party, so, that's what happened.

I think we talked about it. What we did was. I had been very involved in the marriage equality fight in Massachusetts doing a lot of political work and um after we got the first bunch of people married I said why don't we go off some place where we can kind of look out on the water and have lunch and talk about whether we want to do this or not.

And I did it overlooking the bridge of Sighs in Venice and um so Tom is one of the few people that sighed 3 times for good reasons on the bridge of sighs. And um, that was September of 2001. Yeah.

But, I don't think there was any proposals we had been together by then about seventeen or eighteen years.
