Hi I'm Chris Davis for About.com. For those of us who drive we've all had that moment when you pull into the garage, park and realize that you are too close one side or the other. Here are a few tips to get it right every time.
Assessing Your Garage to Create a Parking Space
Before you create a means of marking your parking spot you should asses your garage. The primary purpose for the garage is to provide indoor cover for your vehicle, however, most people also keep lawn equipment, kids toys, bicycles, and so on in the garage. As you create a perfect parking spot you will want to make sure that you have a couple feet of clearance all the way around your car. This will ensure that you and your passengers can open the doors, you can access the trunk and pass by the front of the car with ease. With this space in mind have some one guide you into the garage and stop the vehicle in what will become our parking spot.
Tips for Parking in a Garage
Take a rope or piece of strong string and a tennis ball. Cut a hole through the tennis ball and pull the rope through it. Tie a knot in the end so that the tennis ball will stay on the rope. With the car parked in the proper spot, use a step ladder placed next to the car, to measure the distance from the ceiling to the point where the tennis ball rests against the center of the windshield. Add a couple of inches to give yourself some extra to tie a knot and cut the rope. Back the car out of the garage. Move the step ladder to the center of the parking space and attach the rope to the ceiling and suspend the tennis ball.
Drive back in and when the tennis ball and windshield make contact park.
