Transcript: How to Choose a Sofa

Hey guys - Jonathon Stewart here for About.com. Some people call them couches, other people call 'em chesterfields. My grandma refers to them as davenports, but a daybed by any other name is still, a sofa. Take a look at these tips on picking the right one for you, and you'll be sitting pretty before you know it. Check it out.

Questions to Ask When Choosing a Sofa

In many homes, the sofa is the centerpiece of living. It's where you go to unwind, relax, and even spend a little time catching some shuteye, so it should be comfortable, but it should also be an attractive accent that compliments your living room. Picking a sofa isn't exactly rocket science, but there are a few things to look out for. Do you want loose back cushions or attached? What kind of arms do you want? Do you want skirted or bare legs? Mostly though, it's going to be about choosing something that you like. So don't forget to head to the store and sit on it. Oh, and you also might want to make sure it's going to actually fit in your house.

Measure the Sofa Space

Start by measuring the space where you're looking to put your new sofa, or just take note of the measurements of your old sofa if you haven't tossed it yet. And, when you do get rid of your old rig, you might consider donating it to a charitable organization like the Salvation Army or Goodwill. In most cases, all you have to do is schedule a time for pick up, and they'll come grab it and leave you with a receipt. That was easy.

Choose a Sofa Style

Next, think about your sofa style. If you want a place to stow guests or need a bed that you can hide away, think about getting a convertible or a futon. If your tastes tend toward the more formal, you might consider something along the lines of a camel back or a Victorian settee. Sharper angles and metal accents are typical of modern pieces, and a rugged sectional with down-filled cushions might win the prize for comfort.

Sofa Essentials

But no matter what style you choose, be sure that it has a sturdy frame, made from hard wood or steel. Weak frames will eventually turn your sofa into a monster that eats you and your guests and spits you all out with backaches.

Pick Out Sofa Fabric

Finally, think about what kind of fabric is best for you. Cloth fabrics come in just about every color of the rainbow, and are generally the least expensive option. Leather and suede are more expensive and considered by some to be more luxurious, though they are often less breathable - and of course are made at the expense of cows. Microfiber fabrics are breathable and soft, and according to some, are also as durable as it gets. Many sofas come with a stain warranty - that includes custom service if you can't remove a stain yourself.

Choose a Sofa That Will Last

Be sure to think down the line here, too. This is a piece of furniture you're likely to have around for many years, so think about sticking to neutral colors, and avoiding super light colors like white. Unless you wrap all your furniture in plastic, in which case, go for it.
