Transcript:How to Save Energy With GadgetsHi I am Gretchen Siegchrist for About.com, with some tips to help you save energy with your gadgets.
Buy Energy Efficient GadgetsThe easiest way to save energy is to get energy efficient gadgets. Everything from cell phones to computers comes with an energy star ratings. Green accessories like solar chargers are available for everything form cell phones to digital cameras.
Laptops use a lot less energy than desktop computers, so make the switch if you can.
Reduce Energy Use on GadgetsScreens and displays are one of the biggest energy drains for gadgets. To save energy with your camera or camcorder, turn off the electronic display and use the viewfinder. This will have a huge positive effect of battery life.
With your computer, lower the brightness of the screen and you'll see big energy savings.
Even visiting web sites with dark backgrounds will increase your energy savings. Blackle, for example, is Google, with a black background and a lower energy footprint.
Don't leave chargers plugged in if they're not charging anything. These little energy vampires can drain a lot of power and leave you nothing to show for it. Using a power strip that can be turned on and off is convenient, because you can keep chargers plugged in but not draining energy.
By changing the settings for when your devices go to sleep or do other tasks you can get them running with maximum energy efficiency. Also, turning off your computer at night will save a lot of energy.
