Transcript:How to Make Homemade Buttermilk SubstituteHi, I'm Erin Huffstetler, your Guide to Frugal Living at About.com, and today, I'm going to show you how to make a simple buttermilk substitute.
Making Buttermilk SubstituteIf you don't normally keep buttermilk on hand, or you're tired of buying it for a recipe only to have the rest of the jug go bad before you've used it, this substitute is for you. Okay, let's get started! For this recipe you will need: Just under a cup of milk and 1 Tablespoon of either white vinegar or lemon juice. Pour your white vinegar or lemon juice into a liquid measuring cup. Then, add enough milk to bring the mixture up to the one-cup line. Give it a quick stir; then, let this stand for at least five minutes to give the vinegar or lemon juice time to sour the milk. And that's all there is to it! Use your buttermilk substitute to replace the buttermilk called for in any baked or cooked recipe.
