Transcript:Homemade Heavy Cream SubstituteHi, I'm Erin Huffstetler, your Guide to Frugal Living at About.com, and today I'm going to show you how to make a simple heavy cream substitute using ingredients that you probably already have in your fridge. Okay, let's get started!
Ingredients Needed for Heavy Cream Substitute
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1/3 cup butter
First, melt the butter. Today we're going to do it in the microwave. 10 to 15 seconds should do it. Pour the melted butter into the milk, and give it a good stir. If you're using low-fat milk, it's also a good idea to add a tablespoon of flour. This will help to thicken up the mixture. And that's all there is to it! Use your substitute in place of one cup of heavy cream, and you should have great results.
Cream Substitute Won't Whip
One thing to keep in mind: this substitute won't whip, so it won't work as a stand-in for whipped cream. You'll need to stick to the real deal for that.
