Hi! I’m Tony Aversano for About.com and today I’m going to tell you about different types of Barbs and Danio fish for your home aquarium. We’re here at Fish Bowl Pets in Stamford, Connecticut.
Barb and Danio Fish are Best Communal Aquariums
Barbs and Danio fish are good companions for goldfish in a cold freshwater aquarium. Certain types are more temperature sensitive and would be happier in a freshwater tropical of 75 degrees or so. These fish are easy to care for and are great for a communal aquarium.
Barbs and Danios both originated naturally in Southeast Asia and India. Today, 99 percent of all the fish sold in pet stores are captive bred.
Personalities of Barb and Danio Fish
Barbs tend to be larger more frisky than Danios. Danios on the other hand probably max out at about an inch and a half in size, whereas there are some Barbs that can grow to 12 inches.
Barbs are what we call moderately aggressive freshwater tropical fish, in that most of them will attain 3 to 4 inches in size. Some of the Barbs can grow to 12 inches, all are schooling fish so they’re happier in a group and make a very attractive display since they all have different colors.
Danios tend to top out at about an inch and a half. Some danios are happy with goldfish temperatures, all the Danios will actually adjust to 75 to 80 degree temperatures, they are all schoolers. They tend to be what we would consider peaceful freshwater tropical fish. There are zebra Danios, pearl Danios, giant Danios. There are long fin versions of most of those.
Size Ranges for Barb and Daino Fish
They are all fish that will not exceed more than 4 inches in size with many of them staying an inch and a half. One of the most popular types of Barbs are the tiger Barbs and the 3 or 4 different colors they come in. They make a beautiful display in an aquarium.
In addition there are Barbs that are called tinfoil Barbs that are silver with orange and black fins as they mature. Those are some of the largest Barbs available that can grow to 12 inches.
You will need all the information about Barbs and Danio fish to determine if they are right for your aquarium. To learn more about freshwater aquariums and other topics, please visit About.com. Thanks for watching.
