Transcript:Quick Tip: Dangers of Keeping Betta Fish in a Vase
Hi, I am Dan Thornton, owner of Reef Encounters in Erie, Colorado.
Betta Fish Need Spacious Aquariums to Thrive
You want to stay away from the Betta in a vase set-up. You really want to stick with something larger than one gallon. Anything smaller than one gallon, really isn't suitable for any fish. It's going to be hard to find heaters, and filters that will fit in anything that small. Usually those have a fish in a vase with a plant, like a lily.
Why Bettas Get Sick in Small Vases
The problem is, the Betta fish has to breathe oxygen from the surface of the water, and as the roots from that lily grow down, it s going to block the pathway to the surface, and your fish will actually drown and die.
Thanks so much for watching. For more information on fish, please visit us at About.com.
