Bonjour I'm Yánnis for About.com and today we are talking about some common French expressions With À. These tips and more can be found on our French site.

Common French Expressions with À

“À emporter” (to go) is commonly used to talk about food: Je vais aller acheter de la nourriture à emporter pour dîner ce soir. I am going to go to buy some food to go for dinner tonight. 

The expression “à fond” means completely or thoroughly: Quand il fait quelque chose, il le fait à fond! When he does something, he does it thoroughly! 

“À haute voix” means out loud. Tu ferais mieux de dire ce que tu penses à haute voix. You should say what you think out loud. 

“À juste titre” means rightfully or fairly. Il a été recompensé à juste titre, il est très talentueux! He's got rewarded fairly, he's very talented! 

“À la fois” signifies at the same time. Il est à la fois drôle et professionnel. He is at the same time funny and professional. 

 

More Common French Expressions with À

“À la hauteur” expresses the capacity you have or not to do something: C'est un projet important, j'espère que je vais être à la hauteur. It's an important project, I hope I am going to be equal to the task.  

“À la perfection” is the French expression for perfectly. Il joue ce morceau à la perfection, c'est très beau! He plays this piece perfectly, it's very beautiful! 

“À la rentrée” is the time when children go back to school in September. In French it is used generally now and refers to the beginning of September. Nous retravaillerons avec ces clients à la rentrée. We'll work again for those clients this fall. 

You can use “à l'instant” when you want to talk about something that happened a moment ago: Sébastien a appelé à l'instant. Sébastien called a moment ago. 

The expression “à plusieurs reprises” means several times: Nous sommes allés en Italie à plusieurs reprises. We have been to Italy several times. 

“À ses heures (libres)” means in one's free time: Il étudie l'histoire de l'art à ses heures libres. He is studying art history in his free time. 

A few expressions starting with À are blessing expressions like: À tes souhaits! (after sneezing) Bless you! or À la vôtre !
