Transcript:How to Count in French
Hello I'm Milo for About.com and today we are talking about counting in French.
How to Count in French: 0-19
Let's start at the beginning:
- 0 zéro
- 1 un
- 2 deux
- 3 trois
- 4 quatre
- 5 cinq
- 6 six
- 7 sept
- 8 huit
- 9 neuf
- 10 dix
- 11 onze
- 12 douze
- 13 treize
- 14 quatorze
- 15 quinze
- 16 seize
- 17 dix-sept
- 18 dix-huit
- 19 dix-neuf
How to Count in French: 20-69
The numbers up to 69 are simple except the numbers ending in 1 where you add "and":
- 20 vingt
- 21 vingt et un
- 22 vingt-deux
- 30 trente
- 31 trente et un
- 32 trente-deux
- 40 quarante
- 41 quarante et un
- 42 quarante-deux
How to Count in French: 70-79
At 70 you begin to reference the numbers as if you were adding from 60. So 70 is actually 60 + 10, continuing upwards. Notice the “and” again for the ones:
- 70 soixante-dix
- 71 soixante et onze
- 72 soixante-douze
- 73 soixante-treize
- 74 soixante-quatorze
- 75 soixante-quinze
- 76 soixante-seize
- 77 soixante-dix-sept
- 78 soixante-dix-huit
- 79 soixante-dix-neuf
How to Count in French: 80-99
Instead of 80 you say four twenties and continue on as before. This time there is no “and” at the ones.
- 80 quatre-vingts
- 81 quatre-vingt-un
- 82 quatre-vingt-deux
- 83 quatre-vingt-trois
At 90 you do what you did with 70:
- 90 quatre-vingt-dix
- 91 quatre-vingt-onze
- 92 quatre-vingt-douze
- 93 quatre-vingt-treize
How to Count in French: 100-1000
The patterns repeat as you go up, and here are the hundreds:
- 100 cent
- 200 deux cents
- 300 trois cents
- 400 quatre cents
- 500 cinq cents
- 600 six cents
- 700 sept cents
- 800 huit cents
- 900 neuf cents
- 1000 mille
