Bonjour I'm Milo for About.com and today we're learning about 10 common phrases in French. These and more can be found on our French site. 

Common French Phrases

Au lieu de >> instead of, rather than. Au lieu d'aller au cinéma ce soir, je préfère rester à la maison: il y a un bon film à la télévision. (Instead of going to the movies tonight, I'd rather stay home: there is a good movie on TV) 

Allons-y! >> let's go! Toute la famille est prête à partir, allons-y! The whole family is ready, let's go! 

Bon anniversaire! >> Happy birthday! 

En retard >> late. Dépêche-toi ou tu vas être en retard pour l'école! Hurry-up or you are going to be late for school! 

Je n'en reviens pas >> I can't believe it. Patrick a encore gagné la course, je n'en reviens pas! Patrick won the race again, I can't believe it! 


More Common French Phrases

Métro, boulot, dodo >> the rat race. Je suis très fatigué en ce moment, ma vie c'est métro, boulot, dodo. I am very tired at the moment, my life is the rat race. 

Oh là là >> oh dear, oh no. Oh là là, les invités arrivent dans une heure et je n'ai pas commencé à cuisiner! Oh dear, the guests arrive in an hour and I haven't started to cook!

On ne sait jamais >> you never know. On ne sait jamais à quelle heure il arrive, ce garçon est imprévisible! You never know when he'll arrive, that boy is unpredictable!

Quand même >> anyway, really, finally. Il pleut mais nous allons sortir quand même! It's raining but we are going out anyway!

Voilà >> there is, that's it. Voilà, tu as trouvé la solution à ton problème! une nouvelle voiture pour aller travailler. That's it, you just found the solution to your problem, a new car to go to work.
