Hi, I'm Jamal Andress for About.com and today we're profiling NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III.
Robert Griffin III Early Years
Robert Griffin III was born in 1990 in Okinawa, Japan, to military parents. After settling in Copperas Cove, Texas, Griffin participated in football, basketball and track in high school. Over two seasons, Griffin rushed for more than 2,100 yards and 32 touchdowns and passed for more than 3,300 yards with 41 touchdowns. As a track star, he broke state records in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles.
Griffin originally committed to play for Art Briles at the University of Houston but followed Briles to Baylor University. He graduated high school a semester early and started classes in Waco in spring 2008 at the age of 17.
RGIII Wins the Heisman Trophy Award
RG3's breakout season at Baylor came in 2011 as a junior following a torn ACL the previous year. The Bears upset TCU to open the season in which Griffin threw for more than 350 yards and 5 touchdowns. After a 10-3 season, he became the first Baylor Bear to win the Heisman after throwing for more than 4,000 yards and 37 touchdowns with only six interceptions. He also ran for just shy of 700 yards and got 10 touchdowns on the ground.
RGIII in the NFL Draft
Having graduated in three years, RG3 declared for the 2012 NFL Draft where he was taken as the second-overall pick by the Washington Redskins. Washington named him the starter for 2012 and he became the first NFL starting quarterback born in the 1990s.
In his first game, Griffin threw for more than 350 yards and two touchdowns and was named NFL Rookie of the Week and later Offensive Rookie of the Month for September.
Stats and Accomplishments
RG3 left Baylor with numerous records, including most passing yards in both a season and career, most touchdown passes, most total offensive yards with more than 12,000 and most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.
