Transcript:How to Throw a Spiral Football
My name is Will Fidler, I'm a former Quarterback for the University of Kentucky. We're here for About.com and I'm going to show you how to throw a spiral.Spiral Football Grip
To throw a spiral, you need to grip the ball properly. You'll want to grip it towards the back half of the football holding the laces. It doesn't matter if you have one finger on the laces or two fingers on the laces, just so that you hold them in the same place every time so you have a consistent grip every time you throw the football.Spiral Throwing Stance
Secondly, you'll want to have a proper stance. For your stance you'll want to have your shoulders pointed directly at your target. This includes your hand, arm and leg. You'll want to step, and open up your body at the same time. Notice the right half of my body stays in the same position. With your shoulders facing directly at your target, after you step and open up with your left side, you take your left elbow and drive it down to your hip, resulting in an over-head release with your right side.Throw the Spiral
The key point to throwing a spiral is what part of your body touches the ball last as it leaves your hand. It has to roll-off your fingers, and your index finger has to be the last thing to touch the ball. As this happens, the ball releases and your hand continues on to result in a palm-outward position. And that's how you throw a spiral. Thanks for watching, to learn more visit About.com.
