Transcript: How to Tell if Your Baby is Hungry

Hi, I'm Ben Kurtzman and I am here with my daughter Clare. Babies can not talk, so they have other ways of communicating their needs with caregivers.

Crying When Hungry

Crying is one obvious way that your baby will let you know she is hungry However, before she starts crying she will give you some other, subtler signs to let you know that she wants to eat.

Baby Lip and Tongue Signals

If your baby is sticking her tongue in and out and smacking her lips she is probably trying to tell you that she wants milk.

Rooting Reflex and Hunger

You can also use your baby's rooting reflex to see if she is hungry. Rub your finger against you baby's cheek. If she turns toward it eagerly and tries to suck, she is probably ready to eat.

Other Signs of Hunger

A baby may also try to tell you that she is hungry by turning her head from side to side or by sucking on her own fists.

Be aware of your baby's cues, You will know she is hungry earlier, before she is fussy or frantic or even starts to cry.
