Transcript: Wardrobe for Special Occasions

Hi, I'm Kim Johnson Gross here to talk with you about how to dress up for special occasions. The invitations arrives then the inevitable question, "What should I wear?" The answers will never get easier until you own a few classics you can count on and then add to the pazzaz by adding some of your favorite accessories.

Plan Your Wardrobe for Special Occasions

Each season look at your calendar to determine how many special occasions you have coming up, then get into your closet and see if you have the right clothes. Weed through them try them on and make sure they still fit. See whatever is missing, then start your shopping list.

Invitations Affect Choice

The invitation you receive is often a good clue as to how formal the event is.
If the invitation is engraved in heavy stock paper in subdued colors it indicates a very formal event. If it's colorful in a fun festive type then it indicates that you should dress in a much more fun colorful way.

If it's a very formal invitation a tuxedo would be great. Otherwise a black or dark navy suit a white shirt without a button down color, and a solid tie, preferably in a silver is probably about as dressy as you can get. Make sure your shows are tied shoes, not loafers black and well polished.

"Black Tie Optional"

When you receive an invitation that reads "Black Tie Optional," men that means do not wear a tuxedo, you'll end up looking like one of the waiters. And women, that means a short cocktail dress, rather than a long formal dress.

When Your Special Occasion is a Wedding

The most frequently asked questions regarding what to wear to a wedding from women is "Can I wear black?" Yes, you can wear black. Black has become much more popular around the country. Except in some places in the South where colors are somewhat more stylish. But if black is what you've got, just jazz it up with colorful accessories.

The most important thing is never to upstage the Bride, so it's probably good to stay away from white.

Just because you need to dress up doesn't mean you should dress like someone else. Wear clothes that are a natural comfortable version of you, albeit a dressier one!
