Hi, I'm Heidi Dehncke-Fisher, here for about.com. Ever wonder how models look so good on the runway?

Models and Designers Talk About the Runway Walk

"I did it last season, 2009 for Milan Britton. It was really fun."

"Well, at first, like on the runway before I go out I'm back stage. It's just really natural my hands get really sweaty and I'm like oh my gosh I'm so scared. But once the music comes on and I get on the runway it's like I own it."

"It takes a level head, it takes a lot of stamina. These girls have to think on their feet. Into the high heels into the flats, into the high heels. And we're relying on them to present our clothes beautifully. A lot of them are extremely young. The average age is like 17 – 18, a huge, huge challenge for a lot of them."

"It's all about. It's all about your confidence, you know. You have to have lots of confidence. You have to wear the garment, you have to own it."

" If you're like (nods quietly) it doesn't work out. Once you put on the garment it's like you gotta put it on, you know."

"All models should have taken ballet classes. You should walk a little bit aristocratic." "I'm in awe cause I see they walk, you know that straight face. They do a great job modeling the clothes."

"You have to be very disciplined."

"I wish I could walk down the street looking like that."

"People always ask me, oh, can you show me how to walk? I mean I can only show you the basics but you kind of have to do it yourself. You know you kind of have to, everyone has their own like special walk. Trademark walk, like Naomi Campbell. They all have their like own trademark walk. So, I would say just keep practicing you know. Watch a lot of runway shows. And just kind of make up your own. But, it's all about being confident, about keeping your back straight. Kind of arching it. Just a bit. And, you know, keeping your head up and there you go?"

"There's an art to the runway."

"It's really interesting for me because models are really talented and they're really almost performers and actresses in their own way. Just in a silent idea and you know they're not dancers but they're still having a persona and they put on some type of show. Walking is still not something everyone can do in the right way. And to carry something strong and powerful or soft and elegant. You know. It's an important job."
