Transcript:How to Measure Clothing Size for Men

Hi, I'm Omar Saad here for About.com, and today, we're going to take a look at how to measure your size, using information from About.com's Men's Fashion site.

Why Measure Your Own Clothing Size

Oftentimes, it can be difficult to find clothes that fit properly. Since sizes aren't standard between merchants, knowing your exact measurements allows you to cross-reference a merchant's website and save yourself some frustration. To aid in getting an accurate measurement, you'll need to wear light clothing. You'll also need a tape measure, a large mirror, and a friend to help you measure. Starting up top, measure around the base of the neck. Once measured, round up to the nearest half. For example, 18 ¼ would be 18 ½.

Measuring Men's Sleeves and Waist

To measure your sleeves, simply place your hand on your hip and have your partner measure from middle of your neck, following down along the length of your arm, all the way down to your wrist. The chest is an easy measure. Simply measure the thickest part of your chest, under the armpits. Moving on to the waist, begin measuring over the area you normally wear your pants up to. It's important to keep a finger between the tape measure and your waist. Since it wouldn't be very comfortable to wear pants that are skin-tight at the waist, this will help you avoid that.

Measuring Men's Inseam and Hat Sizes

If you want to get an accurate measure of your inseam without having to visit a tailor, begin by having your partner measure from your crotch down to where you want your pants to end, usually at the top of your shoe in the front and just above the heel at the back. An easier way to get your inseam measurement only requires that you measure from the crotch seam to the bottom of a pair of pants that fit you well. To measure your hat size, simply measure around your head, above your ears about a half inch. While it's something that many of us never consider, measuring to find your exact sizes can help you find clothes that fit more comfortably. Following the aforementioned steps can help you achieve this in a matter of minutes!
