Transcript:How to Throw a Baseball

Hi, my name is Keith Stephens for About.com Parenting. Today I'm going to show you how to teach your young athlete the proper way to throw a baseball. Let's get started.

Supplies Needed to Throw a Baseball

Before we begin, here's what you will need:
  • a baseball
  • a baseball glove
  • a throwing partner

Grip the Baseball Properly

First, let's look at the proper way to grip a baseball. You need to grip the ball across the seams with a loose, controlled grip.

Point your elbow toward your target. Bring the baseball directly behind you and point it away from your target.

Begin to Throw the Baseball

As your arm comes through your throw, it will not be directly overhand, and will not be sidearm, but will be at what is called a 3/4 position.

As you begin your throw, your elbow comes around, then your wrist, and then your hand will snap the ball to your intended target.

Your release should be as if you are putting the ball into your target's glove.

Position Your Feet Properly

The position of your feet is very important. You are standing sideways as you aim your elbow at your target. Your weight shifts to your back foot, and as you throw, your weight shifts to your front foot.

Maintain Control of the Baseball

Follow-through is very important for you to have control and some zip on the ball. As you release the ball, your arm will continue to follow on through and come to a stop somewhere between your knee and hip.
