Transcript:How to Dribble a Basketball

Hi, my name is Keith Stephens for About.com Parenting. Today I'm going to show you how to teach your young athlete the proper way to dribble a basketball. Let's get started.

Before we begin, here's what you will need: a basketball and a safe level area with a hard surface.

Get Into the Proper Position

First let's look at the proper position to dribble a basketball. To start out, take the ball and bounce it in front of you.

Do not smack the ball with your hand or palm of hand. Use your fingers, and push the ball. You have to spend some time in learning this feel for the ball.

Walk and Dribble

Now as you begin to feel more in control of the ball, start walking and dribbling at the same time. Begin to dribble the ball in front of you and also to the side.

Always keeping control of the ball. As you advance in the dribbling, begin to dribble with the other hand as well.

Set Up Some Obstacles

An excellent practice option is to set up some obstacles and dribble around them. This will improve your control of the ball and give you a feel for actually maneuvering in a game.

Your next step would be to begin running and dribbling at the same time.
