Hi, My name is Christina Gavenda. Today I will be showing you thrift store costume ideas. You don’t have to spend a fortune to have well made and creative costumes for your kids! Thrift stores are awesome resources and you can often make a much better quality costume than what you would buy at store.

Start with Thrift Clothing for Costume Inspiration

In the clothing section you can find things like football jerseys, overalls to be a farmer or a scarecrow, formal dresses for little girls to dress as a princess, tutus to be a ballerina, ripped jeans and items with faux fur on them to make a werewolf costume, long skirts and shiny tops to create a mermaid costume, bandannas and button down shirts can be used to be a pirate or biker.

Look for Costume Props in Thrift Store

In the household and miscellaneous items section you can find things like football helmets, straw hats, pumpkin decorations, decor with fake leaves, wigs, little girl tiaras, baskets, fake fruit, Christmas decorations and many more items to embellish your costume! In the toys section you can find stuffed animals to use as props, sunglasses, funny fake glasses, kid’s toy medical instruments and masks.

Thrift Store Jewelery Completes the Costume

In the jewelry section you can give your costume a finishing touch. If you’re making a mermaid costume out of a long skirt and shiny top you could spice it up with a beaded necklace or use the necklace to make a belt! If you’re daughter is a princess shiny clip on earrings and over the top necklaces can be so much fun! If you’re son is dressing up as a pirate you might find chains or black necklaces to use. Another great costume idea is a mad scientist over sized glasses either found in the kids section or the jewelry section and a large men’s watch can add real flair!

The ideas are endless! Keep an open mind, engage your children in the process, and have fun! Thanks for watching, for more information visit us online at About.com.
