Cookie Mix Gift Jars are a Family Friendly Craft ProjectSupplies for this project are pretty straight forward. You will need 1 quart Mason jars, The dry ingredients from your Cookie recipe, and material for decorating. The decorating portion of the project is really up to you. We went to our local craft store and purchased a variety of ribbons, cloth, and craft supplies. With a little imagination and creativity you can create Cookie jar mixes as holiday gifts, birthday presents, special occasions or just for fun.
As you start this project you may want to asses the age level of your assistants to determine what parts of the project they will become most involved with. Pre-measuring ingredients is a good idea when working with toddlers. They can still help fill the jars, however you know that the measurements are correct. For older children it can become a learning opportunity as they determine what measuring devices they need utilize to create their mix. You may also find that if you are working with very young children that you may want to fill the jars yourself and have them help with the jar decoration.
Clean Jars and Pack with the Cookie Mix Dry IngredientsFirst make sure to thoroughly clean and dry the jar you will be using. Choose a favorite Cookie recipe. measure out the dry ingredients and layer them one at a time in the jar. As you pour in each layer take a moment to pack it down. This will help the layers stay separated and create a visually pleasing mix. You may also want to alternate light and dark ingredients to create some color contrast. If you would like to add more texture to the appearance layer, Chocolate chips, nuts, or dried fruit in the jar.
Decorate the Gift JarsOnce you have added all of your dry ingredients its time to dress up your jars. Be creative. We often use ribbons and cloth over the lid to create a a very classic appearance, however, any approach will work. Adding synthetic flowers, spoons, and stickers will also dress up your jar. With toddlers, hand prints can help make a great keepsake. Use a paint designed (fix wording) to be used on glass. Try different shaped jars. They also can create a very unique look. Just make sure that it is big enough to hold your dry ingredients.
Add Recipe and Instructions to the Cookie Mix Gift JarsAfter decorating your jars you will need to add the cooking directions. You can hand print them on a decorative card and attach them to the jar. Small clothes pins and paper clamps or a ribbon help create a homestyle look. Printing them on a adhesive computer paper is another option that looks great as well. Storing in a cool, dry location, will allow your gift can last up to 6 months, as long as all of the ingredients used to make it were fresh. However, If the mix contains nuts, or dried fruit it should be used within 3 months. No matter how you decorate your cookie jars you are bound to create a memorable gift.
