Hi, my I'm Christina Gavenda with About.com. Today I will be showing you how to make a Bert and Ernie costumes. You don’t have to buy expensive masks to have great costumes!

To Make Bert and Ernie Costumes, You'll Need:

  • Poster board
  • Scissors
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Pencil
  • Yarn
  • Tape
  • 2 striped shirts & a white turtleneck that mimic the Bert and Ernie shirts.

Bert’s shirt has vertical stripes which are blue, green and orange, and he wears his shirt with a white turtle neck. Ernie’s shirt is red and blue horizontal stripes.

Paint Bert and Ernie Masks

Make your own masks with poster board and acrylic paint. For a Bert mask, trace the outline of the head and hair with a pencil. Be sure the head shape is oblong, with little half circle ears on the sides, and make the hair stand straight up in a little tuft at the top. Place a large oval shape in the middle for his nose, make a large muppet mouth with a toungue-shaped mouth hole inside. Place big eye shapes beside the top of the nose, and make pupil shapes to use for eye holes. Don’t forget to give Bert a big black eyebrow over his eyes!

Cut the Costume Mask to Fit

Cut out the pupils for eye holes, cut out the tounge shape for a mouth hole. Cut out two small holes above the ears. Use these holes to place the string through. Fold the ear shapes up so that they stick our when the child is wearing the mask. Use the acrylic paint to paint his face yellow, his eyes white, his hair and eyebrow should be black, his nose should be orange and his mouth should be maroon.

For an Ernie mask, trace the outline of the head and hair with pencil. Make the face shape an oblong circle, and make the hair stick out. Draw semicircle ears on the side. Make a big round circle in the middle for a nose, two big round eyes with pupil shapes for eye holes. Make a big muppet mouth with a tongue shape for a mouth hole.

Paint the Bert and Ernie Masks

Cut the head outline out. Cut out the pupil shapes for eye holes, and cut out the tongue shape for a mouth hole. Cut out two holes just above the ears to thread the yarn through while the child is wearing the mask. Fold the ears up so that they will stick our while the child is wearing the mask. Use acrylic paint to paint the face orange, the nose red, the eyes white, the hair black, and the muppet mouth should be a maroon color. Have the children wear their striped shirts and their masks and the costume is complete.
