Transcript:How to Make an Accordion Book

Hi, my name is Lea Elleseff and you are watching About.com Parenting. Today I am going to show you how to make an accordion-style notebook.

Accordion Book Supplies

This is a great activity for adults and kids alike, so go ahead and make a whole bunch with your neighborhood. Here is what we will need:
  • a long piece of paper. I bought this scroll at an art store.
  • a ruler
  • a pencil
  • clear masking tape
  • scissors
  • glue
  • two pieces of rectangular cardboard
  • two decorative images
  • two rubber bands

Determine the Size of the Accordion Book

Let's begin. Spread out your piece of paper, using a random object to hold it in place. Use your ruler to measure out regular intervals on both sides of the scroll, making vertical marks by each interval.

This will set your page width or length, depending on how you hold the book. I am making mine five inches.

Carefully draw a line between each pair of markings, using your ruler to get it straight. Now we are ready to fold.

Create the Pages of the Accordion Book

Starting at one end of the scroll, fold the paper along the first line. Use the back end of your scissors to score the fold.

Now fold the opposite way, along the second line, and score again. Alternate this way down the scroll very carefully, doing your best to fold along the lines. When you reach the end, your paper will look like this.

Create the Accordion Book Jacket

Now that we have the pages of our notebook, let's turn to the book cover. These cardboard pieces will serve as the jacket, so you want to make sure that they are a little larger than the pages of the notebook.

Now we can decorate the covers by gluing on decorative images. I am using photographs, but there are many other options.

Next we are going to laminate the cardboard with masking tape, like this. This will protect the image and the cardboard.

Finish the Accordion Book

Now attach the accordion notebook by gluing each end to a piece of cardboard, and your notebook is ready to use on both sides.

For a final homemade notebook touch, pull on two rubber bands to keep it closed, and another closing option is Velcro. Take a look at how it works on this notebook.

There are many ways to decorate and alter your own accordion notebook, so go ahead and start folding.
