Transcript:How to Make a Snowflake Ornament
Hi, I'm Aubrey for About.com. Today I'm going to show you how to make a snowflake Christmas tree ornament using instructions for familycrafts.about.com.
For this Snowflake Ornament Craft, You'll Need:
- Old Puzzle Pieces
- White paint (make sure it is non-toxic and water-based)
- Craft Glue
- Collage Pauge or thinned glue
- Glitter
- Ribbon
- Small jingle Bell
- Paint Brush
- Scissors
Design a Snowflake with Puzzle Pieces
To begin, select a few old puzzle pieces that you can arrange into a snowflake shape. Set a piece of paper, newsprint, or parchment paper on your work surface to keep it clean. Now paint all of the puzzle pieces and allow them to dry.
There are a few times throughout project, when you will have to allow paint or glue to dry before moving on to the next step. If you are doing this craft with children, you may want to have another activity planned for the waiting brief periods, for example you could provide them with a coloring book and crayons while the glue is drying.
Allow Paint to Dry on the Ornament
Now that the paint is dry. Carefully arrange the pieces into a snowflake design. Glue the pieces together. Use a lot of glue. Reinforce all the edges where the puzzle pieces meet with extra glue. Allow the snowflake to dry and the glue to harden. Once the glue is dry, flip the snowflake over and add more glue to strengthen the ornament. Again allow the glue to dry.
Now you will prepare the snowflake for the glitter. Paint the surface of your snowflake using a paintbrush and either watered down glue or collage pauge. I like to put a new sheet of paper under my craft before adding the glitter so less of the glitter sticks to the paper. Liberally sprinkle glitter on your snowflake. Give it a moment to set. Pat the glitter on the snowflake. Now pick up the ornament and shake off any excess glitter. You can carefully return the glitter back to the container. Now give the glue and glitter time to dry.
Embellish the Snowflake Ornament
Cut an 8" to 10" piece of ribbon for the next step. Fold the ribbon in half. Glue the ends of the ribbon. Attack the ribbon to the back of the snowflake. This will allow you to hang the ornament. If you like, you can add another bow to the front of the snowflake allow with a jingle bell or whatever decoration you like to embellish your ornament.
You can hang the ornament on a Christmas tree. You can also incorporate into your gift wrapping. Thank you for watching. For more information, tips, and craft ideas, visit parenting.about.com.
