Transcript:How to Make a Pumpkin WitchHi! I'm Debbie Anderson for About.com! Making your pumpkin into a witch can be a fun way to celebrate Halloween. So today, I'm going to show you how to make a witch pumpkin!
Supplies for Making a Pumpkin WitchFor this project, you will need:
- a large ripe pumpkin with a stem
- a permanent ink marker
- a knife
- a large metal spoon
- a witches hat with wig attached
- and a large bowl
Instructions for How to Make a Pumpkin WitchFirst, place the pumpkin on a large piece of newspaper so that it is lying with the stem pointing out to one side to act as the witch's nose. Then, use your permanent ink marker to draw a circle that is large enough for your hand on the rounded side of the pumpkin towards the opposite side of the pumpkin stem. Next, make a side-lid for your pumpkin by using your knife to cut along the circular line at an angle so that the outer edge of the lid is larger than the inner edge.
Then, scrape the pulp and seeds from the base of the side-lid. Next, cut two opposing small half circles that are just large enough for a fingertip to fit into the edges of the pumpkin's side-lid so you can easily remove and replace the lid on the pumpkin. Next, use a large metal spoon to remove all of the seeds and pulp from the inside of the pumpkin and place the contents from inside the pumpkin in a large bowl as you continuously scrape out the inside of the pumpkin.
Continue scraping the inside of the pumpkin until all of the pulp and seeds have been removed, and also until the walls of the pumpkin are approximately ½ to 1 inch thick. Next, using the stem of the pumpkin for the witch's nose, use your permanent ink marker to draw the witch's other facial features on the pumpkin. For the eyes, draw two very odd shapes above the stem of the pumpkin with one eye on each side of the stem.
Then, use your permanent ink marker to draw an abnormal looking mouth with only one or two teeth on the bottom of the mouth to make it look scary.Next, use your knife to gently cut along the lines of the witch's facial features on the surface of the pumpkin to carve out your images of the witch's face. Then, gently push the shapes out of the pumpkin with your fingertips after you have finished carving out each of the facial features.Next, place a small amount of glue on the top of the witch's pumpkin head and then place a small amount of glue on the inside seam of the witch's hat where the wig attaches. Then, carefully pull the wig hair out toward the undersides of the witch's hat and place the hat with the wig hair on top of the witch's pumpkin head to secure the hat. Finally, allow the glue to completely dry.
