Transcript:How to Make a Photo Ornament

Hi, I'm Susan Harding with About.com and we're going to show you how to make Christmas tree ornaments with kids, featuring a favorite photo. Photo ornaments are wonderful ways to preserve memories and can be a great gift for grandparents.

Supplies for a Handprint Photo Ornament

For this first project, you will need:

  • craft foam in two different colors
  • ribbon
  • a photo
  • sequins
  • glue
  • a pencil
  • scissors

Make a Photo Frame for the Handprint Photo Ornament

First have the child trace their hand onto some craft foam, carefully going around each finger. Then, cut out the handprint. Choose a photo that is the right size to fit into the palm of the hand and crop it if necessary. To make a frame for the photo, place the photo on some craft foam. With a pencil, measure and trace a rectangle that's just a bit bigger than your picture. And then carefully cut it out. Fold the foam in half and cut out a rectangle in the middle, leaving you with a frame.

Finish the Handprint Photo Ornament

Put glue on the edges of the photo to glue it onto the back of the frame and then glue the photo to the handprint. Kids can also decorate it with sequins to add some glitz. Take a ribbon and loop it, then glue it to the back, so your ornament is ready for hanging. You may also want to write the child's name and date on the ornament.

Supplies for a Popsicle Photo Ornament

Another easy photo ornament can be made out of popsicle sticks. For this craft you will need:

  • four popsicle sticks
  • sequins
  • glue
  • a photo

Make the Popsicle Photo Ornament

Put glue in the middle of each popsicle stick, directly in the center, gluing them onto each other, to form an eight-sided star. Kids can decorate it however they'd like, by sticking glue on the ends and adding sequins, leaving room for the photo. Take the photo and glue it into the center of the star. Then take a ribbon, form a loop, and glue it to the back, and it's ready to go. And again, always remember to put their name and date on the back, since it will be treasured in years to come.
