Hi! This is Meghan Lynn Allen for About.com, and today we'll discuss how to make a Christmas countdown calendar.
Make Christmas Countdown Calendar and Decorate
Sometimes called an Advent calendar, a Christmas countdown calendar is a fun way to count down the days to Christmas, and maybe do a fun craft with your kids. Think about it like a calendar that you'd hang on your wall. Make rows and columns of 6 or 4 - however you want to fit them on the page. And don't forget that you can leave some room around the sides to decorate. Once you've written the numbers 1 through 24 in each box, you'll want to find something that the kids can post on top of each number to count down the days until Christmas. You can cut up little piece of wrapping paper that you saved from last year, and the kids can glue a piece right on top of the number as the day goes by. You can also think about special holiday stickers or gift tags instead of just plain wrapping paper.
Different Styles of Christmas Countdown Calendars
And think about what additional supplies you might need to decorate this calendar once you're finished. You can take colored pencils, markers, or even glittery markers to decorate the corners of the page. So here's the calendar we threw together, simply and easily, with some recycled materials from last year's Christmas. You can use bright, neon paper like we've done today, with some items we had around the house. Or you can go out of your way to find more traditional colors, like red and green.
Web Resources for Christmas Countdown Calendars
You can also turn to the web, to crafting websites, for templates for your Christmas calendar. Here's one from About.com's own Family Crafts site. Here's a blank Christmas tree that the kids can fill in as the days of the month of December go by. In addition to printing out the tree template, you'll want to print out the page of ornaments. The kids can color them in, all 24 of them, and as each day goes by, put the ornament on top of the number. If you've printed out this tree template on plain white paper, kids can take the time to decorate all around the tree and write their names on the bottom, before you adhere it to the refrigerator or the wall, and start counting down the days. You and the family can also draw the template for yourself. Draw a tree or Santa Claus face, or draw the calendar with hand-drawn lines.
