Transcript: How to Make Potato Stamps
Hi, my name is Lea Elleseff, and you're tuning into About.com Parenting, where today we're going to make potato stamps. This is a fun activity for kids or parents who love to decorate. But before we start, you should know there is going to be a lot of knife cutting involved. So if there's going to be children present, make sure the parent holds the knife.
Potato Stamp Supplies
Here's what we'll need:- potatoes
- a large and small knife
- paint
- a brush
- markers
- something to stamp on
Cut the Potato Into Shapes
Using the large knife, cut the potato in half, or even thirds. Once that's done, we're set to cut out shapes. For starters I'm going to cut out a rectangle and a triangle. Then, for more difficult shapes like stars, I'm going to use a marker to draw out the image first.
Now, using the small knife I'm going to cut along the lines. Ta-da! Here's your star.
Brush Paint Onto the Potato Stamp
Now we are ready to stamp. Using your brush, apply paint to the surface of the stamp. Then press the stamp onto your paper, holding down firmly, to create images like this.Go ahead and fill up the paper with all of these different images. Wow, look at that.
Get Creative With the Potato Stamps
The possibilities are great. For instance, I made this tablecloth with just two potato stamps. And now that you know how, you can make potato stamps of your own and use them on whatever you like. Thanks for watching. For more information, visit us on the Web at parenting.about.com.
