Transcript:How to Make Heart BasketsHello! I’m Holly Deambrosi for About.com. Here’s a craft that is simple enough for most children to make. I am going to show you how to make a heart-shaped basket using just a few materials.
Supplies for Heart BasketsYou will need:
- 2 foam sheets in different colors (You could also use heavy paper or felt)
- Craft glue
Instructions for Heart BasketsBegin by folding a sheet of foam in half and cut the folded piece in half across the middle. Repeat with the second sheet. You should now have two long rectangles. The size of the foam really doesn't matter as long as both pieces are the same size.
Next, place one folded rectangle on top of the other, turned clockwise from the other. Draw a line along the edge of one side.
Round the open ends of the rectangles using the line you drew as a guide for the sides.
Now mark four lines from the drawn line to the fold of the rectangle so that you have five evenly spaced strips. Cut along these lines, making sure not to cut past the first line you drew.
Make sure the strips are separate and begin weaving the strips of the two rectangles together. Alternate weaving strips through and around each other.
Weave a row and then slide it back to the line. Begin with the next row.
Continue until all the rows have been woven together. Open up the heart and you will see that you have a basket.
Cut a strip of foam to make a handle for your basket. Glue or staple it to the insides of the basket.
Embellishments for Heart BasketsNow you have a charming little basket to share with someone. You can also add embellishments for different occasions.
Here I've punched a hole above each strip to weave a ribbon through and glued a daisy on the front. Wouldn't that make a wonderful Mother's Day basket?
Add a special cookie and a handmade card and you have a gift that will brighten someone's day.
You can make mini baskets and put candy in them for Valentine's Day party favors. Whatever the occasion, you and your children will enjoy making these baskets together.
