Hi, I'm Jee Chua for About.com. Today, I'm going to show you how to make fairy wings the easy way.
Supplies Needed to Make Fairy Wings
To make your own wings you will need the following tools and materials:
- Pliers
- Scissors
- Glue Gun
- Crafts Glue
- 2 1/2-inch wide Paintbrushes
- Pantyhose
- 1 meter Long Steel Wire
- 1/2 yard Elastic Band
- Water-based Paint
- Glitters
- Sequins
- Stapler
- Silk Flower
- Duct Tape
Make the Frame for the Fairy Wings
First, connect and twist both ends of the steel wire using pliers. Hide the connection using duct tape. The easiest way to shape the wings is to hold the middle part of the hoop and bring them together to the center. Secure this part by twisting it two times. This will give you the shape of the number eight. From here, work with the curves until you are happy with the shape of your wings.
Cover the Fairy Wing Frame
Cut the pantyhose into two down the center to separate each leg. Pull each leg tightly onto each side of the wing frame towards the center and tie them together. Cut any excess from the pantyhose after tying.
Decorate the Frame of the Fairy Wings
This is the part where there is no right or wrong way to do it. You can give it your own creative spin. You can make it as colorful as you want or keep it plain and simple. The important thing is to make sure you keep a sense of symmetry when decorating each wing. First, apply glue to the edges of both wings, then sprinkle with glitter. This will hide the steel wire and secure the pantyhose to the wire.
Apply a Base Color to Your Fairy Wings
Apply a base color of your choice. I’m going with green wings. You can lighten the color by applying the paint with more water, or you can deepen and brighten the color by using more paint. Really brighten your wings and showcase your creativity by experimenting with color combinations. Take your glue gun and stick on the decorative sequins. Apply the sequins to areas where imperfections in the pantyhose are visible. When you’re finished, let the wings dry completely for a few minutes.
Apply the Finishing Touches to Your Fair Wings
Connect and staple both ends of the elastic band. Shape the elastic band to a number eight figure. Fasten the elastic band to the center of the fairy wing frame using duct tape. Hot glue the silk flower on top to hide the duct tape. This also serves as a decorative ornament. Here's the finished fairy wings.
