Hi, I'm Scott for About.com. Today I'm going to show you how to make an alphabet coloring book.

Supplies for the Homemade Alphabet Coloring Book

You'll need:
  • a printer
  • white printer paper
  • colored construction paper (2 pieces) or a plastic report cover
  • a hole puncher
  • hole-punch reinforcement stickers (optional)
  • a box of crayons
  • 3 small cuts of string
  • scissors

Print Out Pages for the Homemade Alphabet Coloring Book

To begin, you can go to FamilyCrafts.About.com to find the alphabet coloring pages. Save the pages to your computer and then print them (in order from A-Z).

If you like, you can combine the letters of the alphabet pages with the color items that start with each letter on a separate page, then print. For example, we took the A letter and added the apple image onto one page, then printed. Repeat for each letter in the alphabet.

Color the Pages for the Homemade Alphabet Coloring Book

You can color the pages before or after binding them into your book. It can be easier for children to color the pages first then they can use the book to practice their letters. Color the printouts with crayons, colored pencils or markers. It's useful to start in alphabetical order from A-Z so that your child can practice this order.

We colored our pages first before assembling them together in a book. This way, one can additional alphabet coloring pages to the book even after it's assembled.

Easy Assembly for the Homemade Alphabet Coloring Book

To assemble in a less permanent fashion, you can use a plastic report cover. Take the completed coloring book pages and put them in alphabetical order. Make sure the sides of the pages are aligned.

Insert all the pages into the plastic cover, close then slide everything into the hard plastic clip. Now you can keep adding new pages to your alphabet coloring book.

More Permanent Assembly for the Homemade Alphabet Coloring Book

To assemble into a more permanent coloring book, use a hole punch and two cover sheets. First, take two sheets of colored construction paper. Then, using a crayon or marker, write the title of the coloring book. Take the two cover sheets and use the hole puncher on them.

Take 2-3 coloring book pages at a time and punch holes into them. Make sure the pages are all aligned properly and that the holes are created in the same position on each page. As an option, you can put hole-punch reinforcement stickers onto the holes of the cover pages for protection.

Next, align the coloring book pages together and put them in between the two cover sheets being careful to align all the holes together. Take the small pieces of string or ribbon and insert into each hole and tie together for the bindings. Make sure you leave enough slack in the binding ties so that you can easily open up your coloring book after all the bindings are tied.
