What Is Basal Metabolic Rate?
Basal Metabolic Rate refers to the amount of energy in the form of calories that your body requires to function normally. Basal Metabolic Rate has several variables, including how much muscle tissue you have and your age. The older you are, the lower your Basal Metabolic Rate, the more muscle tissue you have, the higher the Basal Metabolic Rate.
More Information About Your Basal Metabolic Rate?
Different body types have different Basal Metabolic Rates. Keith here is going to have a different rate than my own because I have more muscle mass than he does, and he is also a runner.
Determing a Basal Metabolic Rate
To determine your own Basal Metabolic Rate, you can use the calculator that we have on About.com. First thing you want to do is enter your gender. Then put in your height. After that, put in your weight, and your age, hit calculate your needs. Remember, your Basal Metabolic Rate is the amount of calories your body needs to function on a daily basis you can increase your Basal Metabolic Rate by increasing your exercise, which is going to make your body require more calories. And you can also release weight by reducing the amount of calories that you eat. Either way you are changing your Basal Metabolic Rate.
