Transcript:How to Make a Floral Arrangement for Thanksgiving
Hello, my name is Danelle Drury Bavel for About.com. Today I am going to show you how to make a floral arrangement for thanksgiving.
Items Needed for Thanksgiving Floral Arrangement:
- Carving knife
- A pumpkin
- A spoon to scoop seeds
- Fresh flower floral foam
The holidays often bring company, and that gives us incentive to spruce up our homes. One of the easiest ways to do that is to add flowers. Autumn provides a rich-warm color pallet, and harvest gives us flowers and produce in shapes and sizes that are a little different from the rest of the year.
Where to Display the Arrangement
Now, before you begin, figure out exactly where you want to display your arrangement. If it will be a centerpiece on the table it should sit low enough for guests to see over. Make sure it is proportioned properly to the scale of the table. On the other hand a floral arrangement by the entry way may look best with some height so that it can take center stage.
Match the Floral Arrangement to Your Home
Also try to match the arrangement with your decor. A rustic setting may call for a basket or mason jar filled with flowers, a refined setting might look best with autumn colored roses in a crystal vase, and very modern home may look best with a more architectural floral display.
Keeping all of that in mind today I am going to show you how to make a simple floral arrangement using a small pumpkin and easy to find flowers. This arrangement is not large and would look best either alone on a small table, or as a pair on a larger rectangular table.
Example Floral Arrangement
First, start with your pumpkin. Cut off the top third as neatly as you can and scoop out any seeds and pulp inside. You can spray paint the pumpkin any color you like, but I chose to keep mine natural. Soak a piece of: cut to size, fresh flower floral foam in water for about 25 minutes and place it inside of the pumpkin. If you cut slits in it before you soak it, it will take in water better. Take your flowers, most any color and type will work, but it is easiest with large full blooms, and press the stems into the foam one at a time. Create a dome shape with the flowers leaving no space in between. If this is your first time using foam be prepared to take your time and experiment a little bit to get just the right height. Once the dome is is filled you can tie a bit of ribbon around it, and your arrangement is ready to be displayed.
