Transcript:Eat Spaghetti Without Making a Mess

Hey there, I'm Danila James for About.com, and today I'm going to show you how to eat spaghetti properly. Without getting sauce all over your face, that is.

Spaghetti is messy to eat because sauce clings to its long, thin threads, spraying uncontrollably as it nears the mouth.

Break Up the Uncooked Spaghetti

Our first option is therefore a preemptive strike. Before you cook the spaghetti, break it up into small pieces, just like your mother did.

Wow, that is easy to eat!

Types of Spaghetti Etiquette

Still, you may find yourself in a situation where this simply isn't possible, like a restaurant. In this case, there are three schools of spaghetti etiquette, or spaghetiquette, to choose from.

The first, slurping, is completely unacceptable.

The second, plunging your fork into the pasta, then twirling it around in a spoon, produces favorable results, but may be too much of a mouthful for some.

Finally, you have the option of going at your pasta with a knife, hacking it into tiny bits that don't splatter your whole wardrobe.

That was delicious, and clean! For more information, visit us on the Web at style.about.com.
