Transcript: Baby Shower Centerpiece: The Diaper Cake
Hi, I'm Donna Pilato, Guide to Entertaining at About.com. There are many fun things you can do to do to reinforce a theme of a baby shower. Today I'm going to show you how to make a three tier, cake-shaped centerpiece comprised of baby related gifts for the mother-to-be.Baby Shower Centerpiece Materials
Most of the items we'll need can be found in your local party store and baby shop. You'll need:- medium disposable, diapers (approximately 50 altogether)
- a large platter
- adhesive tape
- 70 feet of narrow ribbon
- 8 feet of pretty, wide ribbon
- rattles
- pacifiers
- bibs
- baby spoons
- a tall baby bottle (filled with small candies) will decorate the outside of the cake
Roll the Diapers
First, cut 48 feet of the narrow ribbon into one-foot lengths. If you want the printed decoration on the diaper to show, roll each diaper from the fold outwards. If not, roll the other way. Tie each rolled diaper with a one-foot length of narrow ribbon.
Assemble the Centerpiece Tiers
Now it's time to make the tiers of the three tier cake. Begin with the largest tier. Create using approximately 27 rolled diapers. Tie an inner circle of about 14 diapers together using a length of narrow ribbon.Stand another row of rolled diapers around that inner circle of rolled diapers and tie using another length of narrow ribbon. Tack the largest tier of the cake to the platter using several pieces of adhesive tape. Use adhesive tape sparingly so it doesn't rip the diapers when the mother-to-be disassembles it.
Create the second tier out of approximately 15 rolled diapers. Tie once again using yet another length of narrow ribbon. Attach the second tier centered on top of the first with more adhesive tape.
Add the Top to the Centerpiece
Get your tall baby bottle filled with small candies and tie five or six of the rolled diapers around it using yet another length of narrow ribbon. Place final top tier centered on top of the second tier and attach as you did with the others.Baby Shower Centerpiece Decorating
Tuck various baby accessories inside the ribbon. Add more ribbon if necessary to keep them secure. Finish the cake with the wide ribbon wrapped around each tier to help secure the accessories and provide a finishing touch.Use the finished three tier cake as a centerpiece on the guest or gift table.
