Transcript:Gmail: How to Set Up a Mail Account

Hi, I'm Chris Iuliano with About.com and today I'll be showing you how to create a gmail account.

Steps for Setting Up Gmail

The first thing you need to do is locate the gmail homepage at accounts.google.com. Once there, go to the upper right hand corner and click on the "create an account" tab. This will take you to the first page in the creating an account process. Add your first and last name, then create yourself a username.

If the one you choose has already been taken, google will give you alternatives or you can come up with a different name yourself. Now add a password, google will let you know if your password is strong enough or not, make sure it is at least 8 characters and had letters and numbers to make it harder for someone other than you to gain access to your account.

More Steps for Setting Up Gmail

Fill in the remainder of the information, and when you get to the bottom of the page, please read through the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, as these are binding agreements with Google.

Next you have the option to create a profile for your account. This is where you can add pictures or others items to personalize your account. It is optional and can be skipped if desired.

Finishing Your Gmail Account

You have now created a gmail account. Click on "continue to Gmail" and it will take you to your account where you can now send and receive emails at your convenience.
