Transcript:Gmail: How to Access Gmail Via IMAP
Hi, my name is Keith for About.com and today I'm going to show you how to access your Gmail account using IMAP.
I'll be using a Mac for this video and setting up the Apple Mail email client.
Enable IMAP in Gmail
First, open up your Gmail account in your web browser. Click on the Settings Cog in the upper right and choose "Settings" from the drop down menu. On the top of the ensuing page, click on the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab. Then, under IMAP Access, click the "Enable IMAP" radio button. Click on "Save Changes" and this will make Gmail accessible via IMAP.
Set Up Gmail Account in Mail
Now you need to configure your client. In OS X, open up Apple's mail application. Under the "Mail" drop down menu, click "Preferences." Next, click on the "Accounts" tab – add your Gmail account by clicking on the "plus" sign at the bottom of the left hand column.
Enter Account Info and Save
Under Full Name, type your name. Then, under Email Address, type in your full email address. Then type in your Gmail password in the space next to Password. Click "Create" and your IMAP configuration is complete. Each email client, whether it's Apple Mail, Microsoft Outlook, or Thunderbird, will have its own specific setup instructions for accessing Gmail via IMAP.
