Hi, I'm Alan James for About.com. I'm here to tell you about Dachshunds. I'm a standard long hair breeder.

Types of Dachshunds

There are three different types of Dachshunds: wires, smooths, and longs. Well, the smooths you know, they don't shed a lot. The wires have like a Terrier wire coat, a stiff coat. And of course the longs, almost like an Irish setter type of coat on them - real long, silky hair, on it.

People have there own preference as far as what they like. You know it's hard to say. Some just rave about the smooths and others rave about the wired, that's why they own them. And I rave about the longs be that's what I like. There are also miniatures and standards, and I breed standards. Standards usually run 32 pounds to 25 pounds. They're great.

Dachshund Temperament

The long hairs are really nice, laid back dog. I think they're a great family dog. I grew up with Dachshunds, born into them. I had smooths, I had wire, but I like the longs. There just nice laid back dogs.

Dachshund Health Issues

Some of the health issues are, you always hear about the back problems. You can have it in the breeding, but if you look at your dogs, look at the ribbing and the keel. Chances are, if you get a good ribbing and keel with him, you won't have any back problems. I mean, they can get some hereditary, but most of the time if you get into puppy mills and things like that, where they do a lot of in-breeding and whatnot, that's where you can get a lot of health issues on.

To me, it's the only breed around its the only one Ill ever have. They're just a great overall house dog, field dog, little dog with a big bark.

Thank you for watching, I hope you learned something about Dachshunds, especially long hairs, and tune in again for About.com.
