Hi, I’m Krista Fileccia with Gaylor Bichons and here for About.com. Today I’m going to tell you all about the Bichon Frise. The Bichon is typically a happy go lucky dog that’s a family dog. And they really want to be with people, children, all the time. And they’re like a perpetual toddler. They are always having fun.Maintaining a Bichon Frise
Bichons tend to have issues with their knees, cause they’re little dogs and that tends to be an issue with a lot of little breeds. So, that’s something we look into as breeders. We test all our dogs knees, eyes, and hips. The Bichons love families, they love kids. They’re great with other dogs, cats, and they’re happiest when they’re with people. The Bichon requires a lot of maintenance. They need to go to a groomer once a month on a schedule and they should be kept short, that’s easier to maintain their coat.
The Bichon is a hypo-allergenic breed, so if you are somebody with allergies, this is a breed you should look into. Typically somebody with allergies will have no issue with this breed. They’re really a great dog to have. People say once you have one, you’ll always have a Bichon.
Training a Bichon
The only thing that might be a little bit of a downfall is they are a little bit harder to house break. You have to be really on top of your training and diligent in order to house break the Bichon. I would tell them expect to laugh, they do a lot of silly things. They’re the type of dog that will jump up on your table. One day out of the blue when they’ve never done that before, run around the house at high speeds, so prepare to laugh cause they are entertaining.Characteristics of a Bichon Frise
The standard should be 9 ½ inches tall to 12 inches tall. So, that’s a pretty broad range. People tend to think that they’re heavier then they are. But, that’s their coat. So they’re not really a very big breed. They tend to be a lap dog, so, exercise is not as important for them, although it is good for them to go outside and maybe run around and take a walk maybe 2-3 times a week.Inside the Mind of a Bichon
Bichons happen to be very smart. They tend to be a little bit manipulative. People think they;’re not as smart as they are. But they are smart. They are easily trained what we call silly dog tricks. Sitting, Standing on their legs, spinning in a circle, so they are very smart. Thanks for watching. For more, visit us on the web at About.com.
