Transcript:How to Tie Dye Knots

Hi, I'm Jen D'Amore for About.com, and today I'm going to show you the tie dye technique: knots.

Supplies to Tie Dye Knots

You'll need:
  • White t-shirts
  • Fabric dye
  • Rubber bands
  • Scissors
  • Plastic or rubber gloves
  • Plastic bags
  • A tray with a grate
  • A bucket of water
And you probably want to wear clothes that you don't mind ruining or splashing dye on.

Prepare to Tie Dye Knots

Damp fabric will ease the spreading of the dye. So first, dunk that shirt and squeeze it out. To do a knot technique, twist the shirt so that it looks like a rope. Then make it into a big classic knot. If there's room you can repeat and make another knot or two beside it. If you have a little extra that you can't tie, twist it and hold it in place with a rubber band, so that it gets a little texture.

Then add your dye. Knotting across a shirt vertically or horizontally will change the direction of the patterns so experiment a little.

Wrap it in plastic bags or saran wrap and let it sit overnight to set.

Wash it out until the water runs clear and see what you've got.

Wash them in hot water with a little detergent. Other ways to set the dye include adding vinegar to the wash or using a hot iron when they're dry.
