Transcript:Hem with Fabric TapeHi, I'm Debbie Anderson for About.com. There's nothing worse than realizing that great pair of pants you just purchased are just a couple inches too long and you have no time to go to a tailor before needing to wear them. So today, I'm going to show you how to apply fabric tape for creating a quick hem in your pants when you need an effective tailoring solution on the go!
What You Need to Make a Hem with Fabric TapeFor this task, you will need scissors, a cloth measuring tape, an iron, an ironing board, and a roll of fabric tape.
First, preheat the iron by turning it on to a medium heat setting with no steam.
Measure Fabric Tape and CutNext, turn the pants inside out and place the the bottom hem of the pant leg on the ironing board so that it is lying flat on the ironing board.
Measure and fold the bottom of the pant leg so that the fold is where the new hem line needs to be for the pants to be at the correct length.
Next, use your scissors to cut two strips of fabric tape so that each strip of fabric tape is the correct length for each side of the pant leg hem.
Iron Fabric Tape into JeansPlace one strip of fabric tape inside the folded material of the new pant leg hem and then double check that the fabric is still lying flat on the ironing board.
Next, place and hold the hot iron over the material where the fabric tape is located “without” gliding the iron across the clothing garment for approximately 5 seconds until the fabric of the new hem is bonded on that side of the pant leg.
Next, flip the pant leg hem over so that it is lying flat on the ironing board and place the second piece of fabric tape inside the new fold of the hem for the other side of the hem. Place and hold the hot iron on the fabric of the hem for another 5 seconds until the fabric of the new hem is bonded on the other side, as well.
Iron the Hemmed JeansFinally, turn the pant leg fabric right side out and lay it flat on the ironing board. Then, press and hold the hot iron on the fabric of the new hem at the bottom of the pant leg for another 5 seconds.
Repeat this process for both legs of the pair of pants. And just like that, you have an instant new hem line in your pants. Thank you for watching! To learn more, please visit us on the web at About.com.
