Hi, I'm Nick and today for about.com, I'm going to teach you how to set up a new project using Final Cut Pro X.

Setting Up a New Project in Final Cut Pro X

There are multiple ways to set up a project in Final Cut Pro X. You can click the ‘File' tab and select ‘New Project', or press the keyboard shortcut Command+N. You can also right-click in the project library and select ‘New Project', click the plus button located underneath the project library or by pressing the ‘Create New Project' button in the centre of a closed timeline.

Settings for Setting Up New Projects in Final Cut Pro

Each of these selections will open a new window allowing you to name your project and assign a default event. By clicking on 'Custom Settings', you have access to a host of specific project options, including video format, resolution and rate. Set these up however you wish, or choose 'Set based on first clip' if you want Final Cut Pro X to automatically match project properties to suit the footage you import. Now your project has been created and you have access to the timeline!

Project Library in Final Cut Pro

Don't forget, you can go back into the Project Library by clicking the reel icon. This allows you to organise your library further, for example, add a new folder by right clicking, pressing the keyboard shortcut Shift+Command+N or by clicking the folder icon located underneath the project library. To add existing projects into the new folder, simply drag and drop. Now the project library is looking much neater!

It's worth remembering that you can also view your project folders by opening the Finder and clicking 'Final Cut Projects'.

Project Properties in Final Cut

If you want to view or alter project properties, right-click the project you want to view and choose ‘Project Properties'. Now, you can not only see more information about the project, but you can alter settings by clicking the wrench icon.
