Hi, this is Andrew Hyland for About.com and this is a quick tip on how to use the shear tool in InDesign.

What Is the Shear Tool?

The shear tool allows you to skew any item that you would like. It works very similar to the scale tool and is very simple to use. In order to use the shear tool, all you need to do is select it from the lefthand side or press O on your keyboard.

Steps for Using the Shear Tool

Once you have selected it you are given a crosshair that you can select your shear point, we will use the center for this example. Next we'll go to the corner of our object and select how we want to skew it. You can skew it anyway that you would like. If you would like to retain some dimensions or proportions of your object while you are skewing it, you can hold the Shift button to do so.
