Transcript:A Review of Ceramide Skin Moisturizers
Hi, this is Dr. Debra Jaliman, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City, for About.com, talking about ceramides in moisturizers.
How Ceramides Work in Skin Moisturizers
Our skin has nine ceramides in the outer layers of the skin. In some people, the ceramides are weak. For example, if you have very dry skin, you may be lacking in ceramides, or if you have eczema. So, one thing that manufacturers have done is to put ceramides in their moisturizers. These ceramides are lipids, and what they do is they add to the outer layers of the skin and help the barrier protection of the skin. So, if you use a moisturizer with ceramides, you find that your skin is more moisturized, and it's less able to crack and to peel.
Other Ingredients in Skin Moisturizers
So, when you're looking for ingredients in moisturizers, look for ceramides because you'll find that it is a great advance. Other ingredients you may want to look for are hylauronic acid, because that's another part of our skin that moisturizes our skin, and what it does is it binds water to our skin. So, if you have hylauronic acid in your skin, it makes your skin much more supple. Another ingredient is shea butter. You can look for all kinds of nut butters, whether it's almond butter, macadamia oil, almond oil. Those are all very moisturizing to the skin.
