What and Where Is Eastern Market?
Located on the Metro's Blue Line, Eastern Market is home to many diverse street vendors and you never know what you may find. One of the main attractions is the Market, which is home to fresh produce, baked goods and many other DC delicacies.
Basics About Eastern Market
After working your way through the free samples you can then move on to shopping at the markets many outdoor vendors. If you go to the Capital Flee Market it offers art, jewelry and antique stands, so it's a great way to support local artists as well as bring home a unique souvenir from DC. The Eastern market has been in operation as a public market since 1873 and was for many years known as the unoffical "town center" of Capitol Hill.
History of Eastern Market
The market nearly closed due to competition from grocery store chains, but local residents fought to keep it open, and since then the area has been revitalized. Hosting a thriving farmers market and flee market. The Market 5 Gallery organizes Art Shows, Music and theater performances.
The Market, housed in a 19th century brick building, suffered heavy damages from a fire. The market closed for two years for restoration and opened again in the summer of 2009 with an award winning new design.
